What do British think of American accents?

I sat behind some people who were trying to imitate the American accent. They were tourists from Britain I guess. It's funny because they assume all American's speak like the southerners. Or that everyone speak like valley girls. They complain we're way too nasally and whiny and loud. Is it true?
